UK Magazines

I have been looking through some UK magazines and trying to get a better understanding of who they are targeting and how they do it. I have come to the conclusion that 'i' magazine is unique in that it doesn't focus on one subject matter the way many others do. The content is far more like that of a newspaper and it is this that we think will be how we get students engaged in reading it.

This is a list of examples that manage to engage students and reasons why they are so successful...

Creative Review

The obvious creative content immediately defines its own target audience. The same can also be said about its student audience, with annual issues about up and coming students it strives in pushing the creative world towards bigger and better things.

The format is also more engaging for students, more so than a newspaper. This applies to the inside and cover of the magazine

Weaknesses
Expensive

Empire Magazine

Specific content - films, has a direct audience
More visually engaging - more appropriate for students. Stands out from others on the shelf

Weaknesses
Doesn't necessarily offer a variety of opinions
Harsh vibrant colours and layouts
