Colour for Print
Colour systems for the print process
Subtractive Colour - The more colours you layer on top of each other the less light is
reflected - colours are subtracted so it becomes darker until you end up with black.
Subtractive colour is what happens when you mix paint, print a picture, or highlight a word on a page.
Additive colour - The exact reverse of Subtractive colour, the more colours you mix the lighter it becomes. Additive colour occurs with televisions, computer monitors and all screen based images.

CMYK (cyan/magenta/yellow/key black – 4 colour process) Subtractive. This is used in the most common printed process called litho or offset litho RGB (red/green/blue – screen based) Additive.
Greyscale (Black and white continuous tone and any shade of grey, such as a black and white photograph)
Duotone (when a continuous tone image is printed in 2 or more spot colours – this term is also generally used when describing tri and quadtones. Spot colour (one or more specially mixed colours as opposed as a result of a CMYK or RGB mix) - Because it only uses a few inks it costs less to print, can also be used for nice effects on the images.
Played about on photoshop with a image to get used to how it all works the image needs to be put into greyscale before changing to duotone. Also experimented with the graphs making hi lights have more of one of the colours (Last image)
Mono (like greyscale but with a coloured ink. - A few screen shots from photoshop,

Brands
Different Brands / logos that represent the different questions
Good is the experience / process of buying and playing records...
What makes it good? - Density of sound
I think
Rawkus -
Rawkus Records is an American hip-hop record label known for jump-starting the careers of both Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Rawkus started in 1996 with initial releases ranging from hip-hop to drum and bass.
I think 'Rawkus' has significant links with vinyl to do with when it was blowing up but also I think the branding and logo design represents the culture of the music at the time.

- CDs - Sound quality, feel of a vinyl

Rough trade Records
In 1978 the world was a very different place. Punk was in ashes, Elvis was not long dead and John Lennon was yet to be assassinated. Music came in analogue form, unsullied by a digital age which was still a hazy blur on the thought horizon. It was in this year that the Rough Trade record label began.

One of my favorite illustrators, Jeremy Fish, love this video, defiantly interested in having a go at similar editing if possible.

Stock / product
This is how the books would come, placed on top of the shoes or somewhere in the shoe-box, I might have to think about a way of attaching it onto the top of the lid so it is revealed with the shoes. The stock of this book is ideal but I want it to be distinguishable from the box, I am going to stick with the grey because it has a similar texture yet stands out and would be obvious when you open the box. I like the way the book covers fold out, I may experiment with some similar designs for my own work.
Roundup
Design for screen - Michael Paul Young
Another really clean website design, slightly more flash based this time which unfortunately slows it down. But the design its self is easy to navigate and has a nice interaction which is relevant to its content. I especially like the consistent lines running through the pages and the way images hi-light when the mouse hovers over them.

Stock
I have chosen my stocks for the inside of the book but I need to think about the cover, I have tried a few stocks but the GSM wasn't ideal and made the book feel less precious. I got a really nice dark grey, textured stock for the packaging and a lighter grey with a perfect GSM for the book covers, I may avoid the packaging and if I do this I will use the dark grey card for the covers.

Design for screen
Proud creative website design, really simple design which becomes hi-lighted in different colours when you go over elements, again the interaction is what really drives this website. Also the simple layout is quick and easy to navigate, really keen on this design.

B&W Web
Design for screen
Beautifully simple and crisp website design for B&W studio, only thing Im not to keen on is its usability, its reasonably complicated to navigate. I do however think this shows how webpages can be pushed, using less traditional layouts and different page sizes, scrolling left to right instead of the usual up and down.Xavier Encinas
Some high end design from Xavier Encinas, really striking typographic layouts and printed work. I particularly like the embossed gold print onto the brown stock (business card). The importance of stock and print method is really starting to interest me, making it relevant to the context of the design and seeing the effect it can have is driving my design at the moment.

Tone of voice 2
Having been through blogs / articles and having really tried to understand who I am targeting I have realised that trainer collecting can range from a hobby to a serious money maker. I am going to keep the text neutral and let the information speak for its self, I want to avoid regurgitating nikes current work so I will avoid any 'iconic statements' about the trainer and use purely factual information.
Adbusters
Using the same layouts and powerful sentences in the same way as nike but delivering a completely different message. Maybe try and achieve something away from nike completely, something that really applies to trainer fanatics, I will read over some blogs and articles to get a better idea of what style of writing and tone of voice is used in this context. I could possible make the packaging look as if it was supposed to have an iconic statement but have it blanked out similar to the identity design in a previous post, suggesting the trainer speaks for its self? - seems to still display that nike arrogance?
Tone of voice
Brief research into nikes tone of voice, most pages rant about their advertising techniques and consumer traps but thats not what I am interested in. I want to look at purely focusing on the trainer not the buyer. Also because the pack would come with the shoes in a limited number (first 100 sold?) and its not trying to sell them it gives me far more room to play about with language / tone of voice etc.
"In Nike's ads, a recurring subtext concerns the relationship between the advertiser and the viewer. Indeed, sometimes the subject of the commercial is not the shoe at all, or what it can do, but rather a self-reflection about the world of other television ads that daily assault viewers with a mantra of consumption based on false assumptions. The most conspicuous false assumption that ads position viewers to make concerns the suggestion that products can make the viewer equivalent to the model (or spokesperson) shown in the ad. This is one of those assumptions that most viewers know to be untrue, but whose seductive powers repeatedly lure them back."

Balance
Simple and well delivered message from new balance, I maybe need to think about a similar tone of voice for my own work, does this fit with the air max 90? Directed to the buyer, so I need my tone of voice to appeal to trainer fanatics, so technical trainer terms or less formal? - look into nike posters / quotes, but try and keep relevant to my own designs.

Revok
Very true in terms of the internet, defiantly true for more than just getting spray paint. Maybe try researching my next project without the internet? Also some outstanding graphic & experimental typography / graffiti.

Interactive
"As a celebration of ten years of graphic design studio ‘Lust’ the designers have developed ‘Generation random’. It is a touch screen (no, no multi touch screen!) that contains all the projects in boxes. These boxes interact with the device as each box has RFID tags. The contents of the box are displayed on the screen which you can browse."
Again showing how far design for screen can be pushed, especially with the ever improving technology of touch screens. The interaction between the physical boxes and touch screen means you can really get physically involved with the huge multi touch screen, which has a lasting impact on the user compared to something purely visual.

Dirty
Amazing concept and process used for this poster. You complete it yourself, the back side is covered with a layer of ink, which you need to 'paint' onto the front side of the poster, to reveal the message that has been spot varnished onto the paper. I love interactive designs, I think its very easy to walk past design and not take it in but when you interact it makes you think and has a much stronger impact.
Burgold
Stunning website and identity design for photographer Sebastian Burgold. Design for screen can also be a large part of creating an identity, websites are such a huge part of the creatives portfolios, they offer a place where your work can be seen all over the world. In this case the website has to communicate the work with a professional and sleek aesthetic, also avoiding being over complicated and in turn to slow. This website I think is a perfect example of how simple can still be beautiful, I especially like interaction with the browser, the consistency and striking colour scheme.
