Wordigami
Love this concept, could be an interesting area to explore for future briefs, also relevant research towards my folding poster ideas, however the impractical size it folds into wouldn't work within the size restrictions for my mailshot.
Poster Research
I am thinking about including a folding poster into the pack, I was looking at different ways of folding and seeing how the folds would affect what stock I choose for my mailshots.

Oyster
Joachim Baan - Oyster
Design for a private club in Belgium, business card design given in a small wax sealed black envelope.
The crisp matt black stock with the wax seal has a classy and professional aesthetic, as well as the business card inside matching up to the quality of design. Using this as inspiration I hope to experiment with wax seal, this would be appropriate to the people I am sending my mail shots to - people living in upper class areas of london, people most likely to be victims of fraud, it may add to the professional feel of the design and encourage people to pay more attention to it.

Ian Curtis - Newsletter
Not so keen on the colour scheme but the simple design is effective and appropriate, and would be easy to mass produce, which is another aspect I need to think about when designing my mailshot.
Puerto Despertar LP
Beautiful concept designed by Bendita Gloria, the engaging envelope design that folds out adds a personal feel to each CD, a really interesting piece of inspiration towards my mailshot design.

Who? - Fraud
I need to decide who my target audience are for my mail shots - this will give me a better basis for my ideas and concepts. I will use some quotes and research from the internet and try to complete some primary research and see where it takes me. This post shows just a few quotes and statistics on who is most likely to suffer from credit card fraud. I am going to focus mainly on identity and credit card fraud to keep the same direction as my last poster designs.
ID fraud costs the country £1.7 billion a year and has directly affected at least six million Britons, according to government figures. Average losses range from almost £2,000 on a credit card and to more than £7.000 on a current account, but the disruption suffered by those whose identities have been stolen and misused is devastating.
Londoners are more than four times as likely as the UK average to become victims of ID fraud - of 54 areas of the UK classified as very high risk, 20 are in London. Southerners aren't much safer - the remaining very high risk areas are all withing the M25.
"Could you be at higher-than-normal risk for credit card fraud or identity theft? According to a recently released study by the credit rating agency Experian, if you live in an affluent suburban neighborhood or an upscale metropolitan area, and/or hold an advanced college degree, then yes, indeed, you could be in a higher-risk category."
The top targets for ID criminals are wealthy professionals, such as directors and business owners, who often live in prime city locations. They are almost four times more likely to have their identities abused than the average UK resident.
People renting - especially those in local council or housing association accommodation - are also at high risk, as are young, single people renting high-value flats in fashionable areas.
One worrying trend is the growth of identity fraud among older sections of society. Couples on the brink of retirement and elderly, often single, people are vulnerable.

Documents
Fake documents from a 419 Scam perpetrated on Yuiry Gaydamaschuk from Russia. I think these documents are really interesting, I think visually the old aesthetic they depict could be interesting to experiment with, photocopying them over and over, repeating sections, trying black and white and seeing how they end up.

Statistics
A UK presentation at the 2002 International Conference on Advance Fee (419) Frauds reportedly claimed that around 1% of the millions of people who receive 419 e-mails and faxes are successfully scammed. Annual losses to the scam in the United States total more than $100 million, and law enforcement officials believe global losses may total over $1.5 billion
In 2006 the Queensland Police Fraud & Corporate Crime Group reported that 419 scams had defrauded over $7 million from Queenslanders, including financial advisers, lawyers and university professors. One victim had handed over $2.2 million to scammers over the preceding two years.

Harvey Glickman's insightful The Nigerian "419" Advance Fee Scams: Prank or Peril? analysed a set of 419 email messages, which supposedly came from -
Nigeria 80 (41%)
South Africa 35 (18%)
Sierra Leone 16 (8%)
Zaire 11 (6%)
Zimbabwe 10 (5%)
and were attributed to -
64 from widows, heirs, or someone representingSource
4 from ex-military, most of these numbers rolled into governmental officials as a category
67 from governmental officials
53 bank officials/accountants
2 other company officials
Highest Losses
Over 41 billion US$ to date, 9.3 billion in 2009

Over 300,000 globally. Growing 5% per annum, faster than ever
Identity theft last year struck 9.9 million Americans, costing businesses and individuals $53 billion, according to a survey commissioned by the Federal Trade Commission.
Image research
My research so far has shown me that the people on the other end of these emails can be high end gangsters and extremely dangerous. Most of these images are taken from a website showing the conversations the scammers have with the victims through emails and send photos of themselves, I think this could be an interesting direction to explore.

This is probably the worst video I have ever seen but its pretty funny and relates well to my research.

Paul Penson
We had a lecture from Paul Penson about what he does, and an insight into magazine design. He works for Creative review and for a lot of his lecture he was talking about the redesign and the stages he has been involved in with the magazine.
When he spoke about the redesign the first change was the size of the magazine, with the post office basing prices on size as well as weight they discovered that if they were to change the dimensions of the magazine to a 250mm square they would save money, from this they also discovered that ergonomically the new size had a nicer feel in the hand. They then used this money and put it into paper stock from the magazine, in an effort to encourage people to buy the magazine instead of purely using the ever popular website.
Another area he talked about was the title of the magazine, changing the design from the simple square with CR to a really beautiful piece of typography. They thought that with the old magazine they were relying on old buyers and not attracting a new market as people may not know the context of the magazine. It was really interesting to see what effects the decisions made and seeing how tedious the process of redesign can be, I really enjoyed the talk and it has inspired me to carry on my collection of creative review.
